Set it to "Prefer Maximum Performance" each time globally you are going to play a game and reset the Display driver to make sure it takes effect. Just remember to set Prefer Max in each profile for each game you play. On the flip side Adaptive will reduce idle temperatures depending on individual circumstances and the card will downclock correctly otherwise Therefore causing performance issues because the card will essentially start going back to idle clocks. The card will do a variety of things such as not maintaining the base clock as a minimum. Adaptive WILL cause problems with many games that aren't the latest AAA fare. It is worth noting however that whether you want to use "Adaptive" performance mode or "Prefer Max Performance" is up to you. Some good info about power management options: Only way to be for sure is to set maximum performance per application. Maybe not adaptive globally if you play old games, or games that appear to have a bug with adaptive.
